Health and Safety considerations are necessary with any piece of equipment but are particularly important with regard to the use of camera cranes. Off Trax operates to a strict code of practice in relation to both the use and maintenance of it’s Jimmy Jib camera crane fleet. Please refer to our downloadable METHOD STATEMENT
CREWING
In the interests of safety Jimmy Jibs must only be manned by experienced and qualified professionals with the addition of extra crew when using the 40’ length and where common sense dictates (due to a hostile environment or other unusual set of circumstances). Good communication between a production and ourselves is vital to make sure that the correct number of crew are supplied ensuring that the equipment can be operated in a safe and professional manner. Under-crewing is also a common cause of costly delays within tight schedules.
Productions should be aware that they could share culpability for any accident involving a Jimmy Jib provided by a company or individual where crewing levels are inadequate.
RISK ASSESSMENT
A risk assessment is undertaken by Off Trax crew at the start of every shoot. This is in addition to the Off Trax Risk Assessment for Jimmy Jib cranes available to production on request from the office and any general risk assessment carried out by production. It is relevant specifically to the risks associated with the use of the Jimmy Jib Camera Cranes and its accessories. Any risks identified are listed and a copy of the form is given to a member of production (1st AD/Production Manager etc) in order for them to take appropriate action and/or inform any other crew members/public who need to be aware. A sample of our on site RISK ASSESSMENT form is available below.
MAINTENANCE, TESTING AND CERTIFICATION
All our equipment is subjected to a rigorous maintenance regime by our in-house team of skilled technicians. In addition to this every Jimmy Jib is tested annually by an independent L.O.L.E.R. assessor (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998). These tests and the resulting certificate are to ensure that each crane has sound structural integrity and is fit for use. Again, this is in line with HSE guidelines and all Jimmy Jib providers are required to provide a current certificate as evidence with every crane.
